5. Case study: Assessment of Biodiversity Conservation Potential of ISFM in Northern Ghana
Quality assurance in this study focused on ensuring consistency in field sampling and sample processing rather than on instrument calibration. Because pitfall traps and COMBI traps are passive sampling devices, no calibration was required. Field assistants received basic orientation on the function and correct placement of traps, sufficient to ensure standardized installation and operation across all sampling sites.
During sample processing, assistants carried out preliminary sorting of specimens into morphospecies based on simple and consistent morphological characteristics. Final verification and confirmation of morphospecies assignments were conducted prior to counting, ensuring consistency and reducing observer bias. Only minimal training was required, reflecting the rapid assessment nature of the study, and all procedures were applied uniformly across samples.
