Towards Zero Hunger – SDG 2: Zero Hunger

Welcome to the module: ‘Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger‘ of Towards Zero Hunger.

Here, you will get familiar with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. In particular, you will inform yourself about the second goal: Zero Hunger.

This module is part of a series of online learning materials.

Towards Zero Hunger will give you insights into the potential of remote sensing technologies to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.

What will you learn?

Achieving a state where all people have sufficient nutritious food to lead an active and healthy life is one of the big challenges of the 21st century. Food Security for all, therefore, is the second of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

  • What is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?
  • What are the SDGs, in particular, SDG 2: Zero Hunger?
  • How can we monitor the progress: The targets and indicators of the goals?
  • How can modern Earth observation technology support achieving Zero Hunger?

In this module, you are introduced to key concepts around SDG 2: Zero Hunger. First, you will get familiar with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. You will then dive into the second goal: Zero Hunger.
Every goal has targets (specific conditions) and indicators (tools employed to measure concrete progress). Data collection plays an indispensable role in sustainable development to track and monitor progress consistently and effectively. Satellite Earth observation data, therefore, has key benefits for tracking progress. Here, you will be informed about the targets and indicators of the goal, and how can EO data contribute to achieving Zero Hunger.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the SDGs, in particular, the second goal: Zero Hunger
  • Getting to know about measuring progress towards Zero Hunger
  • Identifying the role of Earth observation-based approaches in support of the goal of Zero Hunger

For which SDG 2 targets is this module relevant?

Earth observation can contribute to reaching the goal Zero Hunger, particularly through targets 2.3, 2.4 and 2.C and indicator 2.4.1.

This module is relevant to all of these targets.

For which food production practices is this module relevant?
