Short Description

Patrícia Genovez undergraduates in Biological Sciences and concluded her Masters’ degree in Remote Sensing by the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE). While pursuing her Doctorate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), she investigated different geo-technologies and image processing methods to detect oil spills at sea surface using Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR). Throughout her academic and professional career, she consolidated expertise with the oil and gas industry, providing spatial intelligence to prevent, prepare and respond offshore & onshore oil spills. As a remote sensing specialist, she worked for 10 years at various petroleum companies acting in operational and scientific projects, as well as participating in real and simulated oil spill emergencies. During a post-doctorate, she investigated how Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data could improve the oil slicks discrimination and characterization using different image processing methods developed by INPE. Currently, she is integrating a research group in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to providing solutions for the oil and gas industry using Machine Learning (ML). This research project is being developed by the Petrobras Research Center (CENPES), at the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), through the Software Engineering Laboratory (LES). With expertise in remote sensing applied to oil slicks detection, she is sharing her knowledge to develop a classification model to discriminate natural from anthropic oil slicks using ML algorithms.
